How to Take Perfect Wedding Photos
Digital Photography ideas and techniques for capturing perfect wedding photos.
Use the right camera resolution
Before shooting, set your camera's resolution based on what you intend to do with your photos. The higher the resolution, the more clarity and detail your photos will have. A 1-2 megapixel (MP) setting may be sufficient for small prints (such as 4 x 6) or e-mailing photos, but choose at least 4 MP if you want to make 8" x 10" enlargements. Keep in mind that you may want to edit and resize these wedding photos later. For this, its important to use a larger MP setting to ensure that the photo is still high quality.
Tell the full photo story
Preserve the entire day by snapping photos during preparation through the whole event. Packing an extra memory card and battery will ensure you can take as many shots as you want.
Capture candid moments
Anticipate a great candid shot by holding your camera's shutter halfway down to lock focus, and then gently press the shutter all the way when you see the perfect picture. This will prevent "shutter lag" and allow you to capture the moment right when it happens. Chances are, the professional photographer will cover the formal wedding pictures, so look for offbeat and overlooked
candid moments instead: a child sticking his finger in the cake, a sea of bridesmaids struggling to catch the bouquet, or Grandma doing
the hokey-pokey.
Think beyond color
Don't limit yourself to color photos. Black-and-white photography has a timeless, romantic quality perfectly suited to weddings.
Get the details
Focus on small details that make the day beautiful. Capture close-up shots with your camera's zoom feature. You can also use your camera's portrait mode(a feature of some cameras) when you want to make sure the subject is in sharp focus and the background soft.
Share wedding photos
Take advantage of Flickr, where you can share photos online, as well as order plenty of prints to pass out or send to family and friends - at just 12 cents for a 4 x 6 print, it's a great value.
And, if you're feeling creative, a photo calendar or scrapbook commemorating a wedding makes a thoughtful gift that will last long after the bouquet is tossed.
